It all started right after I graduated college and started working. I finally had money to buy tools and started building a cedar strip canoe. I've always loved the look of curly maple and wanted to make the gunnels of the material. I started looking online and talking to some local wood dealers to see if I could find some reasonably priced material. It was nearly impossible to find anything that didn't cost $100s of dollars or had any sort of decent figure...and that was when I found Bob, the owner of Kloes Custom Furniture.

I found him on Craigslist (I know what you are thinking, another dead end) as a last ditch effort to find some of this stunning material. I sent him an email asking if he had enough curly maple for me to use as gunnels for a cedar strip canoe. He responded within an hour saying "Buddy, I've got more curly maple than you will need in your lifetime!" Needless to say I shot over to his shop that next weekend to see what he had to offer. I was like a kid in a candy shop. He had more curly, birdseye, flame birch, curly cherry, and live edge slabs than I have ever seen!!! I ran around the shop grabbing everything that caught my eye and ended up spending all of the cash I brought not willing to let any of this gorgeous material leave my sight. We started chit chatting about woodworking, projects we are working on, and just life in general. As it turns out, Bob is even more interesting than all of the figured wood he sells. I asked him if he would be willing to take me under his wing as an apprentice and to my surprise he was more than willing to teach me as much as I was willing to learn.

Now its three years later from when we met and I've learned a vast amount about woodworking from Bob and we are working together to try and share this beautiful figured lumber from wonderful Wisconsin with the rest of the country. Hopefully we are able to help others find the figured lumber they are looking for like Bob was able to help me!!!
